Writing Assignment #1:

She lights up any room she walks into. Her smile instantly warms the hearts of those around her. Her voice brings peace to the restless. And she sees the good in others. She is my sunshine.

And she is my mother, Sylvia Allen. A wife for 29 years. A mother of my two brothers and myself. A loving human being dedicated to living life to bring sunshine to other people’s worlds.

From a young age, I have recognized my mother’s heart for serving others. She is someone who loves unconditionally and wants the best for everyone.

Her heart to serve was heavily influenced by her aunt, she said.

My mom has the creative ability to make artistic cards and write personalized notes.

“Art has been a great coping tool because it just kind of frees my mind and allow my brain to just go into a creative flow,” she said. “Maybe how some people think of exercising, that’s how I feel about art. It just gives me a great release.”

The creative process that her mind goes through while creating the details of the cards is something allows her to feel liberated, she said.

“It’s kind of my form of meditation,” she said.

While my mother brings so many others sunshine, she did not always have sunny days. She went through various trials from her parent’s divorce to her dad having a heart attack.

But it is through the hard times that she persevered.

She has taught us to find joy in trials and tribulations. She celebrates our victories and she hugs us tighter when we need a hug.

I continue to be mesmerized by the constant joy that radiates from her heart.

She credits marrying my dad, having children and finding God as the suppliers of her joy.

“But the fact that when I really give myself to God and let him in my life, I find a lot of peace and a lot of joy,” she said.
